KATHMANDU: Nepalese Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala is suffering from respiratory infection and has been advised complete bed rest for a few days.
The 84-year-old leader "has been advised to take bed rest for 4-5 days as he is suffering from a lung problem and having difficulty in breathing", Koirala's advisor Aditya Baral said.
Koirala, who took over as prime minister in April 2006 after the King's absolute rule ended, has not attended his office at Singhdurbar for a week due to ill health.
The premier had chronic bronchitis due to his previous habit of chain smoking, according to sources close to Koirala.
Senior Cardiologist Dr. Bhagwan Koirala and Dr. Man Bahadur K.C., who examined the premier at his residence at Baluwatar on Sunday, advised the leader to avoid venturing out.
As per the doctors' advice, Koirala has been provided with oxygen support more frequently. Koirala has also been told not to speak to or meet visitors to avoid any exertion and further infection of the lungs.
Koirala did not take part in the first joint election campaign rally by the seven parties in Kathmandu last week after his health suddenly deteriorated.
