MADURAI: Sri Lanka continues to be a major destination of drug trafficking in this region though it was doubtful as to whether the island nation was the sole consumer, according to Inspector General of Police (Anti-Video Piracy Cell) G Ramanathan.

Talking to a group of reporters here on Thursday, he said Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan were the states supplying the bulk of the illegal consignments. Drug cultivation and production was very high in these three states, he added.

These drugs were being used for medicinal purpose as well in the war-torn country, it was pointed out.

Stating drug trafficking in Tamil Nadu was very much under control, he said the monitoring mechanism has been strengthened.

To questions about containing video-piracy, he said releasing CDs of new films along with theatre release would greatly reduce piracy.

In the last two-days, Rs three lakh worth CDs of various new films were seized during the operation in the city and seven people including a woman, the kingpin, Subha (37), were arrested , he added.
