A New York City man could face a prison term if convicted on a drug charge after the "cooked rabbit" he said he was carrying through US airport customs turned out to be bricks of cocaine, authorities said.
The fuzzy tale unfolded at John F Kennedy International Airport when Roger Levans declared on his US customs form after a Delta flight from Guyana last week that he was carrying food items.
When inspectors asked for more specifics, Levans said he had "cooked rabbit," according to the complaint filed in US district court.
Subsequent inspection turned up a bag with three brick-shaped items wrapped in tape. Each brick contained a kilo (2.2 pounds) of cocaine, the complaint said, but no rabbit.
Levans, who told authorities he works as a security guard at Yankee Stadium, was arrested but released on $1,00,000 bail.
He faces a federal drug charge that carries a possible sentence of as much as 40 years in prison, authorities said on Tuesday.
