A survey has found that a majority of Australians would rather have a beer with new prime minister Julia Gillard than Opposition leader Tony Abbott.

The exclusive Galaxy poll conducted nationwide showed that Gillard, 48, came way ahead of Abbott, 52, where personality traits were concerned.

"By a factor of around two to one she outpoints Tony Abbott on the basis of being a good listener, understands the need and values of the community, being tough but fair and someone that you would trust," the Courier Mail quoted Galaxy chief executive David Briggs as saying.

On the question of who they preferred to have a beer with, Gillard topped the poll by 42 to 35 against Abbott.

But Abbott came in tops in one poll, where 52% of Australians rated him as "someone you don't like much", with Gillard receiving one-quarter of the votes.
