A strong earthquake of magnitude 7.9 shook Nepal before noon on Saturday, causing extensive damage with toppled walls and collapsed buildings, injuring many and leaving a pall of dust over the city.
At the main hospital in Kathmandu, people with broken limbs and arms were being rushed in for treatment. It was unclear how many people have been injured. There was no immediate estimate on fatalities.
Tremors were also felt across northern and eastern parts of India. The tremors were felt in Jaipur, Lucknow, Guwahati and Patna, besides Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR).
Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that India will reach out to those affected by Saturday’s tremors, following an earthquake that hit Nepal and Northern India. “We are in the process of finding more information and are working to reach out to those affected, both at home & in Nepal,” he added.
