KATHMANDU: Haling Nepal's transformation to a republic, the local media, nevertheless, cautioned on Thursdaythat a change in political mindset was required to ensure stability.
Giving the Maoists main credit for turning Nepal into a republic, the Kathmandu Post, however, disagreed with the violent method adopted by them.
"As a commitment has already been made to federalism, we cannot escape delineating the country into a number of federal units," it said in an editorial.
Indifference and distrust of the monarchy towards people's rights and its frequent meddling with the democratic system led the country towards a republic, the Kantipur Online said.
"Nepal has set an example before the world by leading the peace process to a logical conclusion through the process of dialogue. The federal democratic republic should be implemented in a fully democratic way to circulate the feeling among the people that Nepal has entered into a new era," it said.
Nepal Samacharpatra, gave the credit of Himalayan country's transformation into a republic to its people.
"Nepal has become a federal democratic republic as a result of people's sacrifice, continuous warning and vigilance," it said while cautioning, "only change in political system does not ensure peace and tranquility. If that is so, Nepal should have been transformed itself over the period of multi-party democracy after 1990."
The Annapurana Post commented that with the removal of monarchy, the tyranny should also cease to exist. "Of course, we have achieved republic but it is not the end. A symbol of tyranny has fallen down and the republic should not be the cause of another tyranny." .
Gorkhapatra said the declaration of republic was the correct way to meet the demands of times. "Nepal has shown an example that no idea or institution can sustain, no matter how powerful it is, if that goes against the current of the time. It is both a lesson and warning for the new riders of the country."
"The representatives of people should not do things that go against people's aspiration and sacrifices," it said.
