A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 was recorded in the sea off the southeast of the Indonesian archipelago on Saturday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

There was no tsunami warning issued after the quake and there were no immediate reports of damage or injury.

The quake was recorded 260 km (162 miles) south of Raba, capital of Sumbawa island, at 1:04pm local time (0604 GMT), the USGS said.

The epicentre was 195 km southwest of Waingapu town in the eastern part of neighbouring Sumba island at a depth of 30 km (18 miles), Indonesia's meteorological agency said in a text message.

"I was sitting with my family in the living room, when it shook for about 5 to 10 seconds, I thought I was dizzy for a moment," said Eva, 24, a Waingapu resident.

The initial quake was followed by an aftershock measuring 5.1 in the same area.
