An explosion ripped through a school bus in northwestern Sri Lanka today, killing one girl, wounding 11 other students and an elderly person.

The incident took place in Kurungala district, 100km north of the capital, and police suspect a personal dispute to be the cause of the explosion in the bus.

The driver of the bus and 12 students were taken to hospital after the explosion, in which one girl succumbed to her injuries.

The blast was the first in five months after the government declared victory over the Tamil Tigers, who waged an insurgency war in the country for more than 25 years.

Police and army bomb disposal teams are conducting an investigation into the incident.
