Stressing that it is up to the Obama administration to respond to former Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf’s statements regarding misuse of American military aid, India has called for greater US supervision of aid being given to Pakistan.

Despite Musharraf’s subsequent denial of having made the statement, external affairs minister SM Krishna is likely to take up the issue with US secretary of state Hillary Clinton on September 25 in New York when they meet on the sidelines of the annual UN summit.

“We are not the ones who gave the aid to Pakistan. It’s for the government of the US to see how they need to respond to this,” Meera Shankar, Indian ambassador to the US, said on Wednesday. She, however, called for more stringent control over US assistance being provided to Pakistan. “The security assistance should be tightly focused on building counter-insurgency capability rather than conventional defence equipment,” Shankar said.
