Filmmaker Roman Polanski has been granted leave from the Swiss jail where he was detained on a US warrant to get medical treatment.
The Rosemary's Baby director had fled to France in 1978 as he was about to be sentenced for having illegal intercourse with a 13-year-old girl.
Lodged in a Zurich jail, he has been fighting his extradition to the US following his arrest last month.
However, the 76-year-old Polanski has now been let out temporarily for receiving treatment for an unknown medical condition, according to his lawyer.
"All I know is that he has been taken from prison for medical attention. I don't know where he is or when he will be returned to prison," the Daily Express quoted his French lawyer Herve Temime, as saying.
Only last week Temime had said that Polanski was "tired and depressed" and in an "unsettled state of mind" when he visited him in jail.
