Pope Benedict XVI on Wednesday condemned the "senseless" attacks that claimed some 183 lives in Mumbai in a telegram sent to civil and religious officials in India.

VATICAN CITY: Pope Benedict XVI on Wednesday condemned the "senseless" attacks that claimed some 183 lives in Mumbai in a telegram sent to civil and religious officials in India.

The telegram, addressed on behalf of the leader of the Catholic Church by Cardinal Angelo Sodano, the Vatican's secretary of state, expressed "profound sadness concerning the terrorist attack", describing it as "senseless acts against humanity."

The Pope offered prayers for the victims of Tuesday's attacks and their families.
