MOSCOW: Russian investigators have identified those responsible for executing four Russian diplomats in Iraq last year, the prosecutor general's office said on Monday.

The breakthrough was made after Russian officials travelled to Baghdad in May to investigate the killings, according to a statement published on the prosecutor general's website.

"As a result of the investigation several new details of the crime have been established as well as the identity of the individuals who carried it out," the statement said.

The statement did not reveal the names of the suspects.

Kidnapped by gunmen in West Baghdad on June 3, 2006, the diplomats were killed after a 48-hour ultimatum for Russia to pull out of its war-torn southern province of Chechnya and free Muslim prisoners from its jails.

A fifth Russian diplomat was killed during the kidnapping.
