A suicide bomber blew his explosive-laden vehicle near a security check point, injuring seven persons on a key highway in Pakistan's Khyber tribal region on Friday.

The suicide attacker detonated his explosives after he was stopped by members of the Khasadar militia about 20 km from the spot where personnel were repairing a key bridge on the Pakistan-Afghanistan highway that carries vital supplies for US and NATO forces in Afghanistan.

The bridge was destroyed by pro-Taliban militants on Tuesday.

Among the seven injured were two security personnel and the explosion damaged vehicles nearby. Traffic was halted briefly after the attack and was restored earlier on Friday.

Officials said the suicide bomber might have intended to target the security forces and other personnel engaged in repairing the bridge.

The destruction of the 110-year-old bridge in Khyber Agency had cut off the main route for supplies bound for NATO and US forces in Afghanistan.

Militants had earlier ambushed US and NATO convoys on the Pakistan-Afghanistan highway or targeted truck terminals in Peshawar. In recent attacks on the terminals, Taliban militants had destroyed over 300 trucks and vehicles, including armoured cars.
