NEW YORK: Latin pop star Shakira and funk-rock band the Red Hot Chili Peppers led the field for next month's MTV Video Music Awards with seven nominations each, MTV said on Monday.
Madonna got five nominations, and so did pop-punk quartet Panic! at the Disco for the awards to be presented on Aug. 31 in New York. Christina Aguilera received four nominations.
Videos from all five are in the running for the Video of the Year award -- Colombian-born Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie," the Chili Peppers' "Dani California," Madonna's "Hung Up", Panic's "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" and Aguilera's "Ain't No Other Man".
Artists set to perform at the show at Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan include Justin Timberlake, Beyonce and Ludacris.
Last year the awards were dominated by veteran punk revivalist band Green Day, which scored seven wins.
