Six killed, 38 injured in China cafe blast

Police have detained a man named Wu Zhanzhi for illegally possessing the chemicals besides the owner and manager of the Internet cafe.

A powerful explosion caused by stored chemicals has killed at least six people and injured 38 others at an Internet cafe in southwest China.

The explosion occurred at around 10:30pm local time yesterday in a shop next to Internet cafe in downtown Kaili city in Guizhou province, reducing it to ruins, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

The blast also shattered windows of nearby residential buildings.

Local police said at least 44 people were in the cafe when the explosion took place.

Police have detained a man named Wu Zhanzhi for illegally possessing the chemicals besides the owner and manager of the Internet cafe.

Injured persons were rushed to the hospital. The condition of nine persons was stated to be serious.

The Internet cafe, with 140 computers, has been operating with a license for a number of years, police said.
