Addressing faculty and students of the Manipal University on occasion of the institution's 2014 convocation, Jayaratne said education is the key ingredient in character building and socio-economic transformation and the learning has no end. It even continues at the work place.

He further said, "The convocation day not only means the end of your academic life but also the beginning of your future journey into professionalism."

He advised the students to be responsible citizens, morally responsible for their actions in life and not to be corrupt.
