NEW YORK: A passenger on a US airlines flight from Los Angeles to Washington was restrained after he became unruly and tried to open the exit door, officials said.

A man wearing military uniform and throwing punches in the air tried to open the exit door of a United Airlines plane carrying 138 passengers and a crew of six.

The man was held down and punched by other passengers.

Air marshals then came and took custody of the man, they said.

Officials said no one was injured in the incident which occurred about three-and-half hours into the flight.

The flight landed at Washington Dulles airport on schedule on Tuesday without any hitch and the pilot said it was not an emergency landing.

FBI and other security personnel met the flight and were interviewing the passengers.
