President Joe Biden has announced his decision not to run in the upcoming presidential election, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as his choice to succeed him. Biden, 81, made this announcement through his X account (formerly known as Twitter). In a heartfelt message to his supporters, he mentioned that he would provide more details about his decision later in the week during a public address to the nation.

Former secretaries of state and past presidents have also endorsed Harris, praising the accomplishments of the Biden administration. These include controlling the pandemic, creating jobs, boosting the economy, and strengthening democracy.

Support from Key Democratic Leaders

Several prominent Democratic leaders have shown their support for Harris:

Rep. Ted Lieu: The deputy chair of the House Democratic Caucus, Ted Lieu, was the first House Democratic leader to endorse Harris. He stated, "I was the first Member of Congress to endorse Kamala Harris for President four years ago. I am deeply honored to once again support @KamalaHarris for President."

Rep. James Clyburn: According to Forbes, South Carolina Representative James Clyburn, a significant Biden ally, has endorsed Harris. Although he did not explicitly ask Biden to step down, he recommended that the Democratic Party unite in support of Harris.

Sen. Chris Coons: A longtime friend of Joe Biden and campaign co-chair, Senator Chris Coons of Delaware, expressed his support for Harris. Coons praised Biden's decision to endorse Harris, describing her as a "genuine leader."

Rep. Andy Kim: New Jersey Representative Andy Kim, who is running for the Senate seat held by Bob Menendez, also supports Harris. He called her candidacy "historic" and emphasized the opportunity to elect the first woman, the first AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) president, and the first Black woman president.

Sen. Alex Padilla: California Senator Alex Padilla, who took over Harris's Senate seat after she became vice president, endorsed her on X. Padilla stated that Harris "has always led with courage and conviction" and has fought for the advancement and protection of all Americans.

Additional Support and a Call for Open Selection

Other politicians who have endorsed Harris include Hawaii Senator Mazie Hirono, Delaware Representative Lisa B. Rochester, and California Representatives Mike Levin and Salud Carbajal. Senators Patty Murray from Washington, Jamie Raskin, and Robert Garcia have also expressed their support.

A letter endorsing Harris is circulating among Democratic National Committee (DNC) delegates. According to The New York Times, this letter highlights Harris's ability to present "a distinct and cohesive vision for the US" and urges delegates and voters to support her campaign.

Despite the widespread support for Harris, some Democratic politicians, such as Senator Jon Tester, are calling for an open selection process to choose the party's nominee. However, with the growing endorsements, Kamala Harris appears to be the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination.
