US treasury secretary Timothy Geithner was sent home on Friday night after successful treatment at a Washington hospital for a kidney stone, a Treasury spokesman said on Saturday.

The spokesperson said Geithner was sent home ahead of schedule, was feeling much better and would be back in his office at Treasury on Monday.

Geithner had been expected to remain overnight in the hospital, but the Treasury spokesman said the surgical procedure was completed without incident and he was sent home early.

The US treasury chief had cancelled appearances on Sunday talk shows of three major broadcast networks to have the treatment.

A kidney stone is a hard mass developed from crystals that separate from the urine within the urinary tract, according to the National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse of the National Institutes of Health.
