Russian President Vladimir Putin and British Prime Minister David Cameron discussed the investigation into the crash of a Russian passenger plane over Egypt at the weekend, the Kremlin said in a statement on Thursday.

The Kremlin said that Putin had told Cameron how important it was that assessments of the possible causes of the crash be based on information from the official investigation. "Joint counter-terrorism work was also discussed," the Kremlin said. In an earlier report, the Russian foreign ministry complained about Britain's failure to hand over information about Saturday's deadly plane crash in Egypt, after London said there was a significant possibility that Islamists had planted a bomb onboard.

The Russian airliner carrying 224 passengers crashed into a mountainous area of Egypt's Sinai peninsula on Saturday shortly after losing radar contact near cruising altitude, killing all aboard. The Airbus A321, operated by Russian airline Kogalymavia under the brand name Metrojet, was flying from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to St Petersburg in Russia when it went down in central Sinai soon after daybreak, the aviation ministry said.
