A seven-month pregnant woman died after her husband hit her following a quarrel over a New Year gift on Monday. The deceased, Pavitra, 21, was a native of Chitradurga. Magadi police station circle inspector H Ravi said Pavitra asked her husband Kumar to buy her clothes as a New Year’s gift, on Sunday.
Pavitra repeated her demand again on Monday.
At 11pm, a quarrel ensued and Kumar slapped her.
She fell unconscious and died. Kumar tried to help her regain consciousness. He came out of the house crying and was spotted by police on night patrol. At the police station, he confessed to killing his wife.
The police later took Kumar into custody and informed Pavitra’s parents about the incident. Meanwhile, Pavitra’s father Dasappa filed a complaint alleging that her daughter died owing to dowry harassment.
The police shifted the body to a hospital on Mysore Road for a postmortem. “We have now registered a case of dowry harassment death under Section 304(b) of the Indian Penal Code. We can change the section if the postmortem reveals it is a case of murder,” said an investigation officer.
Kumar works at a garment factory and the couple got married 10 months ago.
Wife kills alcoholic husband
A man whose death was initially attributed to a fall was in fact killed by his wife, investigation on the basis of postmortem report revealed.
Ramesh, 33, a vegetable vendor, was found dead at his rented house in Rajarajeshwarinagar police limits on December 25, 2011. The police said at first instance, it seemed like he died by falling from the building. His wife, Sheela, too, told the police that he might have fallen accidentally.
However, the postmortem report revealed that Ramesh was strangled. His body had injury marks too.
After getting the report, the police interrogated Sheela, who confessed to killing her husband.
Sheela said she beat him with sticks and then pushed him from the third floor to make his death look like an accident.
She said her husband was a drunkard and used to harass her regularly.
The police have arrested Sheela.
