The verdict is that the actress settled for a not-so-great franchise when she could have done better
Deepika Padukone turned down Fast & Furious 7 owing to prior commitments (read: Ram-Leela), and is currently in the news for being part of another franchise XXX with Vin Diesel, who is the only common factor between the two films’ franchises.
The actress recently took to Instagram to post a picture of her hugging a bald man, presumably Vin (with his back to the camera) with the XXX logo in the background. Diesel recently announced his return to the franchise, with a film titled Xander Cage Returns and that filming would begin this month.
The general feeling in the industry is that the actress would have landed a much bigger Holly film, had she been more patient. The signs are all there. Nargis in Spy, Priyanka Chopra mainlining Quantico, and Deepika is at the top of the game today and should have aimed higher. The actress seems to have settled for XXX3, a one-man show. The previous leading ladies of the films have not been A-List actresses (as opposed to an Eva Mendes in FF5) and also had little to do in the film. Which might also be the case in XXX3. Vin has said in an interview, The movie is going to have “action of the highest order”, teasing that the movie has an extreme sports take on the spy film genre.
Whether or not Deepika has a big part in the film, it’s safe to assume that XXX 3: The Return of Xander Cage is a potential blockbuster hit, after all, Diesel was recently involved in blockbusters like FF7 and Guardians Of The Galaxy.
The only plus point is that since Dippy and Diesel are working together, there’s absolutely no reason why he won’t recommend her for FF8, scheduled to release in April 2017. Failing that, the Fast franchise has two more installments and a planned expansion via spinoffs.
Future jinxed?
Actresses who star in the XXX series never really make it big. Asia Argento who starred with Vin Diesel in 2002 and Nona Gaye who acted in XXX: State of the Union in 2005 and met with little success post that. Hope that doesn’t happen to DP.
