A man was killed after he fell into a gorge from a dilapidated timber bridge in West Garo Hills district, police said on Wednesday.

The man identified as 36-year-old Anand Borah fell down from the old Rogkhon bridge on the outskirts of Tura after his car got stuck in the bridge last night, they said.

"We received information this morning about the incident after which a police team visited the spot. The body of the victim was recovered and has been taken for post mortem and details are awaited," said Superintendent of Police of West Garo Hills, Dr MGR Kumar.

Police reports said that the car that Borah was driving got stuck near the end of the bridge.

"We are of the opinion that as it was night he may have got down to check his car and as there was no timber, he missed his footing and fell down the gorge and may have died due to the fall. We will be able to provide further details after investigation," the SP added.
