As fuel prices skyrocket across the country, a newlywed couple from Cuddalore in north Tamil Nadu was presented with five litres of petrol on their wedding by their friends as a gift.

The couple, Elanchezian and Kanimozhi, got married on Sunday morning in Cuddalore district's Kumaratchi.

Friends of the groom, who attended the wedding, handed over five litres of petrol to the couple.

The photo of the couple being presented with a five-litre can of petrol went viral on social media.

Prabhu, one of the friends of Elanchezian and a member of Democratic Youth Federation of India, who presented the unique gift said that the present was an attempt to create awareness among the public about the record hike in fuel prices in the country.

Petrol prices touched Rs 85.15 per litre in Tamil Nadu, one of the highest in the country.

It has become a novel way of protesting against the fuel price hike in Cuddalore with another couple in the district also receiving petrol as a wedding gift on Monday morning.

The couple, Divya and Prabhu, seemed to be taken aback by the gift in a video but accepted the gift from their friends.

Prabhu, who is an autorickshaw driver, received four litres of petrol.

Prabhu's friends said that it becomes difficult for autorickshaw drivers to make customers understand why they are charging more. Therefore, they decided to help their friend and gifted the couple the petrol.

Meanwhile, an autorickshaw driver was assaulted by BJP cadres when he tried to raise the issue of petrol price hike with the party's state president Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan on Sunday night.

When Tamilisai was interacting with media, the driver Kathir raised the issue of fuel price hike but he was pulled away by the party cadres who allegedly manhandled him
