A former CISF guard arrested for allegedly placing a crude bomb in a Kingfisher aircraft here recently has told the police that his act was meant to expose "security lapses" at the airport.

According to police, 49-year-old Rajasekharan Nair, a cleaning supervisor of the private agency to which the ground-handling job of the airport had been outsourced, during interrogation had said he had carried the 'crude bomb' concealed in his socks.

Nair contented that he had placed the explosive to demonstrate the security lapses in the airport and had no motives other than that, they said.

The accused said he entered the airport through a gate which was normally used by the ground-handling staff.

He claimed that he had often brought to the notice of the airport authorities security loopholes in the airport. He had often complained that the contract employees were let into the airport without proper checks. For doing this, he had incurred hostility of the ground staff engaged by private agencies and some of them even had quarreled openly with him, police said.

The investigators, however, made it clear that they would be conducting a thorough and unbiased probe without being led solely by the statements given by the prime accused.

Nair, who had served in CISF for 20 years before taking voluntary retirement in 2003, was arrested on Sunday for placing the explosive in the cargo hold of the aircraft that arrived from Bangalore. The incident had caused a bomb scare and officials admitted to security lapse.
