A replica of a haveli to showcase Ahmedabad’s rich heritage will greet visitors at the Shanghai Expo in China when it kickstarts from May 1.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has outsourced work for an attractive exhibition pavilion spread over 230 square metre to an agency in Shanghai, to house all its ambitious projects like Sabarmati Riverfront development project, Bus Rapid Transit System, Kankaria lakefront project etc.

Interestingly, the World Expo Bureau, organiser of the Shanghai Expo, has sponsored the expense of setting up the exhibition pavilion and has also given the AMC US$ 3 lakh. The expo will continue till October 31. Around seven cr people are expected to visit it. Ahmedabad will represent Indian cities in the “Urban Best Practice Area”. Around 80 countries in all are expected to showcase their exhibits at the Expo.

While the move will, on one hand, put Ahmedabad on the global platform, it will also give corporators and AMC officials a chance to visit China. If the buzz in the civic body is to be believed, plans are being chalked out to take all the city’s corporators to China to organise one last trip abroad before the AMC goes to polls.

“The exhibition will continue for six months. And it is not possible to depute one official or elected member to China for such a long time. So, it has been decided that small delegations of officials and elected members will be sent to Shanghai Expo. Once one delegation comes back from the expo, another will be sent to China,” said a senior AMC corporator.

However, expense for commuting and accommodation in China will not be provided by the Expo organisers and the civic body will have to burn its pocket to participate in it. Apart from Ahmedabad, Pondicherry will be the other Indian city that will take part in the Expo.
