    Amid violent protests in the Kashmir Valley, Congress ministers in state have appealed to the people, particularly youngsters, to maintain peace and calm.

    In a meeting, chaired by deputy chief minister Tara Chand here last evening, the Congress ministers unanimously welcomed the statement made by Union home minister P Chidambaram in the Parliament and appealed to the people of the state to extend full support to the Omar-led coalition government for restoration of peace and tranquility.

    While expressing their confidence in the initiatives and efforts of the state government, they appealed to all sections of the society and right-thinking people to take notice of the sensitivity of the situation and come forward to play a vital role in maintaining calm and peace in the state.

    The ministers also expressed thanks to UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and the prime minister Manmohan Singh for taking keen interest in the affairs of the state.

    Prominent among those who attended the meeting were minister for school education and public enterprises Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed, minister for tourism and culture Nawang Rigzin Jora, Minister for Health, Horticulture and Floriculture Shyam Lal Sharma, minister for revenue, relief and rehabilitation Raman Bhalla, minister for medical education RS Chib.
