The Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI), Ahmedabad, has completed 25 years and is apparently aiming high. On the occasion of its silver jubilee celebration on Saturday, EDI announced it wanted deemed university status for the institute.

President of EDI and the chairman of IDBI Bank Yogesh Agarwal said the institute would soon apply for deemed university. “If we get the status, we will be able to offer various special degree courses at the institute. Apart from that, there are many advantages that we can avail after obtaining the status of deemed university,” said Agarwal.

Echoing Agarwal’s views, EDI director Dinesh Awasthi said in future the institute may also join hands with foreign universities. “With deemed university status, we can also have tie-ups with foreign universities for entrepreneurship courses,” said Awasthi.

The EDI was set up on September 26, 1983, promoted by national financial institutions such as IDBI Bank, ICICI, IFCI and State Bank of India with support from Gujarat government. “Now, we want to become an acclaimed international resource centre facilitating all facets of entrepreneurship,” said Awasthi.

Awasthi further said that EDI wanted to design and offer tailor-made programmes for corporate houses and undergraduate students of prestigious
institutions. “We want to undertake research projects extensively on various facets of entrepreneurship,” he said.

In future, EDI wants to create a cadre of trained social entrepreneurs. “We will offer eight-week social enterprise development programme to train potential entrepreneurs to impart training to ensure setting up of social enterprises. Further, we want to conduct a case study of 25 successful social entrepreneurs of India,” said Awasthi.

EDI also wants to set up Micro business parks to enable transfer of commercial skills to micro enterprises,  he said.
