The government is expected to come under attack over its "failure" to stem rising prices and disinvestment policy when top leaders of CPI(M) meet here from tomorrow to take stock of the prevailing political and economic situation in the country.

The two-day politburo meeting would also review the agitational programmes being carried out in different parts of the country, which would culminate in a massive joint rally of Left parties in March, party sources said.

The recent assembly polls and bye-elections, including those in West Bengal where the party lost, would be reviewed.

The top leaders, including chief ministers Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Manik Sarkar, would take stock of the 'rectification campaign' that has been launched at all levels of the party to rid itself of ills like corruption and various forms of ideological deviations.

The situation in West Bengal, where a large number of CPI(M) leaders and activists are being killed in continued attacks by Maoists, would also come up for discussion.

On the international scenario, the politburo would critically review the government's stand on issues relating to climate change and WTO negotiations, among other things. The party is already opposing the End Use Monitoring Agreement with the United States on arms purchased from it, as also a proposed legislation on Nuclear Liability saying these moves were being undertaken to favour American companies which would supply nuclear reactors to India.

The CPI(M) has also vehemently opposed the government's recent decision to dilute its equity in profitable publicsector units by up to ten per cent, the proposal to amend the FDI limit in the insurance sector and the legislation to allow FDI in higher education.

Accusing the government of totally failing to curb rising prices, the four Left parties have decided to mobilise people from across the country for a joint rally here during the Budget Session of Parliament in March.

Their ongoing campaign is also for highlighting problems like growing unemployment, particularly in rural areas, and the issue of land acquisition for industries.

The politburo meeting would be followed by a crucial meeting of the CPI(M) Central Committee in Kolkata from January 29 to 31, the sources said.
