With students and their parents eagerly awaiting the decision on the format of board examinations in the state, the members of the experts’ committee, formed to suggest changes, failed to arrive at any final decision even after a marathon meeting held on Saturday. The members will meet again on October 7.

The committee, headed by former principal secretary Sudhir Mankad, has three issues to deal with - implementing semester system in board examinations, making 10th examination optional and doing away with the practice of announcing top ten students.

After its second meeting, which continued for almost seven hours at the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) office, the members said that the parents and the students should get ready for changes in the examination pattern, but only by 2011.

“Though, nothing is final till now, the panel may suggest eliminating the practice of declaring top ten achievers. Most of the members found some drawbacks in this system,” said one of the committee members.

“As soon as the list of the top ten achievers is out, schools, across the state, try to ‘buy’ the top rankers in order to attract more students and earn money in the process. Members, however, didn’t find any fault in the semester system,” he said.

Members were of the view that the GSHSEB should not take any hasty decision this time as on an earlier occasion, the then board chairman RK Pathak had to face the wrath of policymakers on the issue of open book system. “This is the reason for convening one more meeting on October 7,” the member said.

“Once the committee reaches any conclusion, we will submit its suggestions to the state government and then the final decision will be taken,” said GSHSEB chairman Hansmukh Adhia. Adhia, however, added that the changes would be implemented only by 2011.
