Ahmedabad saw a decline in the number of medical emergencies on Uttarayan day this year compared to 2012. Overall, the 108 helpline attended to 360 such calls on January 14 — a drop of 5% compared to last year, when it dealt with 378 such cases.

Leading the list were road accidents (82). Injury due to fall from the terrace or such other places accounted for 32 of the cases reported, while 24 calls were about injury caused by kite thread.

The city also saw a 50% jump in medical emergencies compared to normal days. On an average, the service attends to 240 calls.

An official connected with the service said that the slight dip in figures could be attributed to increased awareness. Moreover, Uttarayan followed the road safety week, where a number of programmes on spreading awareness about accident prevention were held. “This also helped matters,” the official added.

Overall, the state saw a 4% decline in emergencies compared to last Uttarayan. This year, 2,524 incidents were reported compared to 2,638 in 2012. Ahmedabad district had the highest number of cases (424), followed by Vadodara (246) and Surat (205).

Mob vandalises PCR van
A PCR van was vandalised on Relief Road late night on Sunday, when it tried to clear traffic of vendors selling kites and manja for Uttarayan. The hawkers and their supporters smashed the windscreen of the police van and fled the spot.

Courtesy Uttarayan festivities the next day, Relief Road was choc-a-bloc with crowds indulging in last-minute shopping. Overzealous vendors set shop right on the already narrow street, which resulted into traffic crawling at snail’s pace. Three policemen, in their PCR van, rushed to the spot to clear the mess near Saudagar ni Pol and ordered vendors to wrap up, but the latter stayed adamant. A verbal brawl ensued between the groups, and even locals joined in.

Profanities led to flexing of muscles as four local supporters attacked the police van and smashed its windscreen. The police officers wisely fled the spot. In their complaint with Kalupur police, the cops alleged that four unidentified men attacked the police vehicle and broke the windscreen worth Rs5,000. Kalupur police are searching for the accused, who have been absconding since the incident.
