Amadavadis on Wednesday experienced a traffic jam of a different kind for few minutes on the city's artery of urban traffic, the Ashram Road, when thousands of farmers, claimed to be more than 5,000, including women, children and a dog, Moti, from villages around Mahuva passed through the city in the last leg of their march to Gandhinagar.

These farmers are protesting the controversial Nirma Cement Plant that is being set up near Doliya village, 10 Km away from Mahuva town. March 16 was the 14th day of foot-march that started from Doliya village on March 3. It will reach Gandhinagar on March 17.

The protesting farmers are being guided by BJP MLA from Mahuva, Dr Kanubhai Kalsariya and other civil society leaders like Chunibhai Vaidya and former state finance minister Sanat Mehta for more than two and half years now. The rally is being led by Dr Kalsariya and Mehta. Senior RSS leader Bhaskar Rao Damle has also joined the march. After their night-halt on the outskirts of Sarkhej, the marchers started their onward journey and reached Sabaramati Ashram at 12.30pm.

Dr Kalsariya said, "This is not a movement against any person but against the policy. Narendra Modi may be a good administrator but we have objection against his pro-industry policy. In his blind race towards rapid industrialisation, he has given land of water-body of Doliya village to Nirma." Kalsariya explained about all the politics and state government's attitude and state's advocate general's opinion on the issue of Nirma Cement Plant.

He informed the rallyist about the latest development when the Gujarat High Court refused to grant stay to Nirma's plea to halt MoEF’s showcause notice and intimation about halting the ongoing work on it.

Sanat Mehta, Gandhian Chunibhai Vaidya, Arunbhai Dave, Gujarat Youth Cong president Indravijaysinh Gohil, Gordhan Zadafia of Mahagujarat Janata Party, CPM’s Arun Mehta talked about their support.
