The newly built anganwadi in the small village of Katol in the Panchmahals district looks swanky.

The entrance is decorated with colourful rods and the spacious and well-ventilated room houses swings, rides and toys. Everything that will attract young kids who otherwise do not get much attention in rural areas for their education.

The new anganwadi, Nand-ghar, built with funds from a foreign agency and a business partner in India is in a stark contrast to the clumsy-dingy building where the government ran its anganwadi. The building, built at a cost of Rs22 lakh, was inaugurated on Monday.

It was the idea of Harish Sheth, chairman and managing director of Setco Automotive, to do something for society and his native — Panchmahals. This led to the fund-raising for the new anganwadi building.

The company that has built three more anganwadis in rural Gujarat got a partner in developing forth one in Austria-based company Miba.

The enthusiasm to help an underdeveloped village with better educational facilities was high. So much so that board member of Miba Group that bore the construction cost, F Peter Mitterbauer, and his wife Johanna decided to monitor the quality of education themselves.

Not only that, they have also proposed to teach English language to the kids along with other subjects taught at anganwadi. "It is said people in India are not that well versed in English language. Also they are not very much educated on health and hygiene issues. Thus, in Nand-ghar, we will impart knowledge to people (including mothers) about family planning, and quality education to be given to the kids," said Johanna.

Sheth in his speech mentioned that major focus will be on health and education.

"We are happy that this anganwadi will take care of this village. We are committed to build many more such anganwadis," said Peter.
