Two persons died due to swine flu at the PGIMER hospital here, taking the total number of deaths in the Union Territory due to H1N1 influenza to six.
 
"Those who died due to swine flu are from outside Chandigarh. The test reports of the patients yesterday confirmed that they had died due to H1N1," Nodal Officer for swine flu cases, HC Gera said.
 
The deceased were identified as Jagdev Singh (51), a resident of Hoshiarpur in Punjab and Amandeep Kaur (42) of Saharanpur in UP.
 
Earlier, four persons had died due to swine flu in different hospitals of the tri-city comprising of Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali.
 
The total number of positive cases in the city has also reached 125, Gera said.
 
Meanwhile, two more students of Punjab Engineering College here have tested positive for the virus, taking the total number of students affected at PEC to 16.
 
With mercury falling in Chandigarh and its surrounding areas, there has been a sudden increase in the number of swine flu cases in the past fortnight.
 
Chandigarh's Health Department has said that it was fully equipped with medicines to tackle flu cases adding that an action plan had already been put in place and three isolation wards with 50 beds each in three major hospitals here -- PGIMER, GMCH-32 and GMH-16 -- have been set up.
 
With a number of school children testing positive for swine flu, screening in different schools is going on.
