The newly-constructed ITI railway under-bridge in Naroda, which will be inaugurated by urban development minister Nitin Patel on Wednesday, is expected to ease the traffic woes for those travelling towards airport and Gandhinagar highway. The proposal for the under-bridge was considered long back and the project was included in the budget five years back. The under-bridge has been the talk of town for right and wrong reasons.

The design of the under-bridge has attracted the maximum talk of the town. An AMC official said, “The technology used for construction of the bridge is 'contiguous pile,' which is latest and is first-of-its-kind in the city.” The official said under this technology, the under-bridge has been constructed using pillars and slabs. In all, 210 pillars have been used in the construction.

The official said that the technology will prevent the overhead slab from collapsing in case of any natural disaster. “While the under-bridge construction was on, it came to our knowledge during digging that the storm water and drainage pipe were an obstruction. Hence, we had to create a different structure as we could not dig further,” said the official.

Since no digging could be undertaken, the civic body thought of an alternative option and came up with the piling technique. While on one side of the bridge towards Galaxy Cinema (where the drainage pipes pass) pillars were erected to withstand the slab because of the loose soil, on the other side of the bridge towards ITI, a retaining wall has been used.

The 498-metre long under-bridge, which took many years for completion, has created a lot of problems for the residents of Naroda. AMC officials are attributing the delay in discovery of drainage line during construction. The delay in construction led to subsequent rise in construction cost. The work on the bridge began initially in March 2007 and at that time, the cost was estimated at around Rs5 crore. Following the change in design, the work began in February 2010 and the total expenditure stood at Rs12.54 crore.
