A massive vaccination campaign to combat the spread of Japanese Encephalitis in various eastern districts of Uttar Pradesh will be launched soon.
    
The decision to this effect was taken at a meeting between the central team comprising joint Secretary in the Union health ministry RS Shukla and Director Health and family planning government of India R Barok and PL Joshi and the state health officials.
    
A massive campaign covering the entire population of children under fifteen years' of age in the eastern region will be launched soon, officials said.
    
Similar campaign was launched in 2007 and 6.5 lakh children were given the JE vaccine. The cases had considerably dropped after vaccination, they added.
    
The meeting also discussed about the infrastructural problems faced by the BRD Medical College here in tackling the huge inflow of JE patients during the monsoon season.
    
More than 20 thousand children and several hundred adults have lost their lives due to JE and other forms of encephalitis in the eastern region especially in the districts situated in the foothills of Himalaya in past three decades.
    
The disease was first reported in 1978.
