Telling your family and friends when trying to quit smoking can significantly help you achieve success, reveals a new study.

In the research involving 1424 Australians two thirds said talking to others about quitting was beneficial.

The survey led by research firm Stollznow revealed that confiding in others could help stave off the temptation to smoke.

Professor Matthew Peters, who is chairman of Action on Smoking and Health Australia, said stress was a major factor in keeping some people smoking.

"Being public with a quit attempt, particularly with those closest to you like family and friends, can help address this," the Courier Mail quoted Peters as saying in a statement.

"What's important is not to give up giving up, even if it's your second or third attempt," he added.

He also suggests deliberately visiting places where smoking is not permitted.

He also recommends seeing a GP or pharmacist.

"They can provide advice and guidance on additional methods of support that will work best for you," Peters added.
