There are men these days who do not want to grow a beard because they consider it old fashioned or just because women don’t like it. However, others think differently. Shamsher Singh Saroye, a security guard at a bank in Punjab, had a strong reason to grow his beard measuring 6 feet. He wanted to get his name in the Guinness Book of World Records and he succeeded. So while you may not want to get your name in the book of records, but you may also not want to waste the opportunity of experimenting at least once in your lifetime.

It was more than three decades ago that ad filmmaker Prahlad Kakkar decided to grow his beard. He was shooting in Angkor, Cambodia, and his reason was a work schedule so hectic that he never got time to shave. You may call it convenience but he cannot part with it anymore. “65% of the women say they don’t like facial hair and the rest 35% will say that they don’t mind it. I say when the beard has become part of your personality and identity, it makes no difference,” he says.

For some unexplained reason, men tend to grow possessive about their beard once they have grown it. Prahlad certainly is. He did not allow the doctor to shave off his beard as a safety precaution when he had a bypass surgery a decade ago. His fear was that people wouldn’t recognise him if the operation didn’t go well and he should die.

Fashion designer Arjun Khanna grew a beard to look stylish and fashionable. He sports a French beard now which has become part of his personality and suits him well. “A beard can look very sexy on some people and at the same time very ugly on others. It won’t look good on Shahrukh Khan but suits Milind Soman. Still, both look equally sexy in their own right. If you ask me when would be the right time for a guy to grow a beard, I would say whenever he feels like experimenting,” says Arjun.

VJ Rannvijay Singh who sports an overgrown stubble believes that it’s a very macho thing to have facial hair.

“My dad was in the army. Because it looked so masculine on him I was just waiting to grow some hair on my face. I am not a chocolate boy.

I might just take off on my bike in the heat and the rain if I feel like. That’s how I am and my beard suits my style,” he says.
