A Mexican businessman has set a new world record for the fastest barefoot water skiing.

Fernando Reina Iglesias was towed by a helicopter in Acapulco and reached 153mph on his second attempt.

The local businessman and lawmaker for the Partido Verde Ecologista (Green Party) broke the record of 135mph established in 1989 by American skier Scott Pellaton, reports Sky News.

Public notary Manlio Favio Pano witnessed the event and corroborated that Iglesias reached the record-breaking speed, recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Iglesias dedicated the record to his hometown and said it was important to do positive things for the tourist destination.
