dna exclusive: Desolation greets Slovenian couple back from Everest base

Maya and Tine Andrejasic from Slovenia were on their way down from the Everest base camp when the 7.9 richter scale earthquake struck. The couple was in the middle of a stream when it started shaking and they realised they were in the middle of an earthquake. They decided to make their way down to the safest place which happened to be Namche Bazaar, a good 11 hours walk from where they were stuck. They walked through snow and came across utter devastation in small villages that dot the route to the Everest base camp. En route, they saw houses flattened and monasteries destroyed. The witnessed destroyed water pipelines and abandoned hotels.

"But the locals had a strong spirit of rebuilding themselves. They asked us if we were okay even though they had lost everything in the earthquake. There was no fear in them. We feel lucky to have made it safe and alive."
