Although the state government has a limited say in fixing the fares and the functioning of the Mumbai Metro, it wants Mumbaikars to believe that it is controlling the fares of the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro line.

On Monday, while interacting with the media, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said: "It is unfair to go for a Metro fare hike without an audit of the project."

He said that there was a meeting in New Delhi in this regard on Monday. "All possible legal options would be explored to prevent a fare hike to Rs110," Fadnavis said.

The state government team, led by minister of state for urban development Ranjit Singh met Union minister for urban development Venkaiah Naidu. to put forth the demands of the state.

During the meeting, the state said it wants the fare fixation committee (FFC) to be reconstituted. The initial FFC has recommended a fare of Rs110 between Versova and Ghatkopar or end-to-end travel.

A suggestion to amend the Metro Railway Act, 2002, to make it more public-centric, in case there are Public Private Partnership projects, was also made. Due to lack of rules on PPP projects, an uneasy situation has emerged in the case of the Mumbai Metro, where the private player has a larger role and say in the management.

The state wants Mumbai Metro to be denotified from the Metro Railways Act, 2002, and brought to the Tramways Act.

In this manner, the state will have control over Metro fares and the Reliance Infrastructure-led Mumbai Metro One Private Ltd will be unable to decide and fix fares as it has been doing for over a year.

A slab of Rs10-20-30-40 are in force up to October this year. Thereafter, there is a possibility of a hike to Rs110. The state wants the ticket rates at Rs9-11-13.
