Overcrowding in train claimed one more life on Friday morning peak hours. The 21-year-old was travelling on the footboard of the CST fast local, but could not balance himself and fell on tracks between Kopar and Diva stations.

The incident took place between 9.30am and 9.45am and was shot by one of the commuters on his mobile which immediately went viral on social media and messaging apps.

The youth, Bhavesh Laxman Nakhate, worked in a logistics firm and was a resident of Dombivli. A case of accidental death has been registered with Dombivli Railway Police.

According to witnesses the youth boarded the train from Dombivli as since it was crowded, Nakhate did not get a chance to enter the compartment.

"When the local reached Kopar, the victim's hand slipped and he fell on the tracks. He died on the spot due to severe injuries on his head and body," said a GRP official.

Avinash Javle (name changed), a commuter who travels from Thane to Dombivli everyday, said, "I work with a private firm and at times I have to go to Kalyan for work. Half of the time is spent on travelling and to ensure we don't miss the train, we board as soon as it arrives at the platform, without judging the rush. This often leads to accidents."

"Delay in arrivals leads to rush at platforms and inside the train. Railway officials must look into this and take appropriate steps," he added.

Arvind Mourya from Rail Pravashi Sanghatna, Kalwa, said, "This is not the first or the last such incident. I think the best way is to increase the frequency of locals as this will ensure less crowding. Also, the railway should complete its pending work, as it causes further delay. Commuters generally do not have an option, so they get into crowded locals."

Senior police inspector Datta Pable from Dombivli railway police said, "The accident took place near the pole number 45/8 of Kopar railway station. The youth was declared dead at Rukmani hospital. After the post-mortem, his body was handed over to his family. He had suffered major injury on his head and a few scratches on other parts of the body."
