A guard attached to Western Railway was allegedly attacked by a group of youngsters at Kandivli station in the early hours on Tuesday. The incident occurred after the guard caught a few youngsters performing stunts at some stations. He was beaten up by the friends of those who had been caught.

A railway official said the incident occurred at 5.20am when Rakesh Sanket, the guard, was on a Borivli-bound local. Sanket informed the railway police control room after he noticed some youngsters performing stunts by hitting the pole and commuters at stations. The police caught some of them at the Goregaon station.

Another railway officer said when the train stopped at Kandivli, a few friends of those who had been caught allegedly hit the guard with a steel chain. Even though Sanket sustained minor injuries to his hands and head, he continued the journey to Borivli and back to Churchgate. He informed his seniors and then got admitted to the Jagjeevanram hospital at Byculla. Officials said Sanket's injuries weren't very serious and he was stable.

Deepak Devraj, deputy commissioner of police (railway), said: "Nobody has approached us and lodged a complaint. We will be recording the statement of Sanket and then decide on the next course of action."
Another railway officer said Sanket had sustained injuries after the stick that one of the youngster was carrying slipped off his hand and hit the guard.

Meanwhile, in a separate drive on Tuesday, the Mumbai Central GRP detained eight juveniles for performing stunts on a train at Lower Parel.
