The city will lose more of its green cover to pave way for houses.
On Friday, the Tree Authority committee, chaired by municipal commissioner Sitaram Kunte, gave its approval to axe 481 trees in Goregaon (East) for construction of residential buildings.

According to Tree Authority, the proposal was submitted by Shashank Kokil and Associates on behalf of Kingston Properties Pvt Ltd on July 31, seeking permission to axe 481 trees for its proposed residential buildings in Dindoshi and adjoining areas.

The trees which will be axed include gulmohar, ashoka, neem, pimpal, suru, nilgiri, vad, cassia, acacia with many other trees.
At present, there are 15 members in the committee and 10 non-councillor members are yet to be nominated.

The proposal was passed in the meeting with a majority. “The proposal was put up for the members to vote. The members voted for and against and the proposal was passed by a majority,” said Kunte.

To axe more than 100 trees, two Tree Authority members have to visit the spot as per the rules. “We went to the site around 15 days ago and recommended the proposal,” said Dhananjay Pisal, one of the Tree Authority members who visited the plot.

Kunte said the two  members, who went to the plot, were also in favour of the trees being hacked for building houses.

“The applicant has agreed to replant and plant trees on the same plot as per the norms set by the committee. He has said this in the affidavit filed with us,” said Kunte, the chairperson of the Tree Authority.

However, two Tree Authority members staged a walkout from the meeting, stating that the agenda was given to them late. “We got the agenda yesterday, which ideally should reach us three days before the meeting,” said Ameet Satam, member of Tree Authority.
Satam and Manisha Choudhary demanded a stay order on the proposal.

Civic officials said staging a walkout is not the right way to oppose the proposal. “The procedure has been followed. We have also ensured them that henceforth they will get the agenda three days before the meeting,” said a senior civic official.
