Chief minister Ashok Chavan on Tuesday announced the formation of a committee, including representatives of the BMC, to thrash out issues relating to water bills due from the government to the civic body.

As on February 28, the BMC is yet to receive dues amounting to Rs915.76 crore from government bodies. Many central government offices and the railways owe the BMC Rs184.12 crore against water bills; Rs48.42 crore from various state government offices; and Rs145.71 crore from Mhada. Private consumers owe Rs537.71 crore to the Corporation.

The issue was raised during the question hour in the state assembly on Tuesday by the Shiv Sena MLAs. Ravindra Waikar, a Sena MLA, alleged that the state owes Rs713 crore to the BMC against services offered by the BMC.

Minister of state for urban development Bhaskar Jadhav said that the BMC owes Rs306 crore to the government.
