A lady accountant cheated her boss for six months by producing fake bills  towards sale of about 50 mobile phones worth Rs6 lakh which she allegedly  stole and disposed of with the help of her husband.

But the party came to an end when Pydhonie police arrested the couple identified as Varsha Patil, 25 and Shivaji Patil, 36, a resident of Dadar. A leading mobile dealer, Ashok Nagpal, who supplies handsets to mobile phone stores in South Mumbai, lodged a complaint with the Pydhonie police station about missing mobile handsets. He also told police that he suspected Varsha behind this theft.

Nagpal decided to approach the police after noticing discrepancies in the number of mobiles sold and the returns from the sale.  During investigation, police came to know that Varsha, who was also handling the dispatch department, would steal the handsets and make fake bills under the names of different stores to avoid suspicion.

She would remove the fake bills from the records after showing it to Nagpal to avoid any further questioning. Varsha would handover the stolen handsets to Shivaji who works with a private security firm. “The husband sold the handsets to different shops, friends or anybody looking for a good deal,” said the officer.

Through the IEMI number of a stolen mobile phone, police tracked down a person using the phone. “From the user we got the address of the shop from where he bought the mobile handset. We questioned the shop owner and found out that he had no record of that piece. He later told us that he bought the phone at a very cheap price from a known person,” said an officer.

Later, the investigating team found out that this person was a friend of Shivaji. Police interrogated Shivaji and came to know he was Varsha’s husband. “We have arrested the duo for cheating and theft and they were produced in the holiday court on Sunday. Our investigations are on to recover all the 50 mobiles which Varsha and Shivaji had stolen and sold,” said senior police inspector Shamsher Khan Pathan.

The investigation team headed by Pathan included Gulab Rao More, Vishwasrao Bhosle, Madhu More, Ramchandra Rane and Nitin Palande.
