If you are thinking of taking the Bandra Worli sea link between 11 to 1 on a Tuesday, think again. A sortie of heavy vehicles belonging to INS Trata, a base located near the sea link belonging to the Indian Navy, has slowed down the traffic on the 4.7 km sea link.

DNA had reported about the sortie which used to earlier take the Khan Abdul Gafar Khan road (Worli sea face) in July 2009. However, after the opening of the sea link, the vehicles have started plying on it, causing delays for thousands of motorists. “We can not even overtake these vehicles which run at a snail pace of approximately 20 kmph. There are defence personnel who stop motorists from doing so,” said a motorist who travels on the sea link between 11 to 11.30 everyday. He further added that this was a regular feature on all Tuesdays.

According to senior officials of the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), which owns the bridge at present, there has been no formal communication from the defence authorities about the weekly trips on the sea link. “The defence department did write to us before the opening of the sea link enquiring about the kind of weight it can take. This was with reference to heavy vehicles of the armed forces including tanks. We had then assured them about the capacity of the sea link,” said a senior MSRDC official involved in the making of the sea link. However, he added that there was no specific complaint from motorists about this delay.

A section of the officials of the corporation were of the opinion that though the armed forces can use the sea link for such sorties, they should not be carried out on weekdays as well as during the day. “The defence personnel can always carry such exercises on Sundays or during non-peak hours such as very early in the morning. Unfortunately, there has been no communication from both sides,” said a senior official requesting anonymity. DNA repeatedly tried to get in touch with the defence spokesperson but they were not available for comment.
