“The world in the 21st century will be a knowledge-based society with multiple opportunities. Educational institutions will be the powerhouse for knowledge,’’ said former president APJ Abdul Kalam. He was speaking as the chief guest at the second convocation ceremony of Dr DY Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune.

Also present were governor of Tripura DY Patil, chairman of ETH Ltd and former CDAC director Vijay Bhatkar, chairman of medical division of Alchemist Group and former director of AIIMS Dr P Venugopal, member of planning commission Narendra Jadhav and special public prosecutor of the state government Ujjwal Nikam.

The degree of Doctor of Science was conferred on Bhatkar, Dr Venugopal and the degree of Doctor of Letters was conferred on Narendra Jadhav and Ujjwal Nikam.

Kalam added that at present, competitiveness is the key and is powered by research.

“Universities should have the motto of teaching — research — teaching. Educational institutions are the breeding environment for creativity and can inject team spirit and inculcate the sensitivity to customers’ needs among students. Value judgement should be introduced in education as values are everything today.

Education with a value system is the need of the hour,’’ he added.
He congratulated the graduating students and further praised the teaching and research system followed at Dr DY Patil Vidyapeeth.
Jadhav thanked the varsity for giving him the honour and conferring him with the doctorate. He added that everyone should try to reach the top position in whatever work they do.

“It was my mother’s dream, to make me a doctor when I grew up, but I could not become one. Today, I am very happy to receive the doctorate from Dr DY Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune, as this will fulfill my mother’s dream,’’ said Ujjwal Nikam.

“Our country’s system has become corrupt and if we want to change it, then it will not happen from parliament. The younger generation has to come forward and take steps to change the system. If we want to end terrorism, we need to catch hold of those who help these terrorists. Then only, it will be possible to eliminate terrorism from our country and the world,’’ he added.
