Officials from Kalachowkie unit of the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) seized counterfeit currency of around Rs13.6 lakh and arrested four people.

A trap was laid near Sagar Hotel in Nagpada on Monday and Samed Rabiul Shaikh, 35, a resident of Nallasopara and a native of Malda in West Bengal and Dildar Hussain Abdul Hadi, 45 a native of Old Delhi were arrested with counterfeit currency worth Rs6 lakh.

Their arrest led the ATS to their handlers — Mohamad Rafiqul Raeesuddin Islam, 23 and Pratap Chaudhary, 24 both natives of Malda — who were caught from Dharavi. Counterfeit currency worth Rs7.6 lakh was seized from them.

Arrest of the four has revealed that Islam and Chaudhary, along with Shaikh and Hadi, used the currency to buy fish in bulk from the wholesale fish market at Ferry Wharf and sold it to other fish dealers for a profit. This helped them push the counterfeit currency in the market and gain more profits, which were 200-300%.

In the same way, they also bought mangoes in bulk and sold it to other dealers.

Islam and Chaudhary said that they got the currency from a person named Ghulam Murtuza from Malda, who is Shaikh’s brother-in-law and reportedly got the notes from Bangladesh.

ATS chief, Rakesh Maria said, “Murtuza is wanted in this case and has three cases of counterfeit currency registered against him in West Bengal. The arrested have revealed that they have been into this activity from last three to five months. Islam said that he has pushed around Rs11 lakh counterfeit currency.”

“We are in touch with the Bengal police and search for Murtuza is on,” he added.

The four were produced in court and remanded in police custody till December 13.
