The senior Congress leader Gurudas Kamat, whose resignation has been accepted by the prime minister Manmohan Singh, finds himself at political crossroads. Neither the prime minister nor
the party president Sonia Gandhi appears to have liked Kamat’s move.

According to an AICC functionary, “The only option for the organisation is to give him some responsibilities in the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC) keeping in mind the 2012 BMC elections.”

However, handing over the reins of the MRCC as the president seems unlikely at this juncture as that would send a wrong message. Unless there are developments related to current MRCC chief Kripashankar Singh allegedly facing litigation of financial irregularities, pending in court.

This could lead to Kamat being considered as the suitable alternative. Singh has always maintained he is innocent and being framed by rivals. If things are smooth, the Congress would like to retain Singh as he happens to be the north Indian face of the party.

According to a Congress official, “The cabinet reshuffle has caused immense damage, as it has intensified the factions within the state Congress and Mumbai Congress.”

Citing an example, the general secretary said, “By rewarding Milind Deora the prime portfolio of communications, information and technology— the leadership has caused much heart ache to Kamat, who was asked to accept the insignificant drinking water and sanitation portfolio. The rivalry between Kamat and senior leader Murli Deora in state politics is well known.

“Similarly, if the party retains Singh to steer Mumbai Congress despite pending litigations it would also upset the Kamat camp,” the official added. But the senior leaders are also aware that Kamat’s role would be crucial in the civic polls. However, close aide of Kamat believe that party cannot sideline him in the Mumbai elections specially after he has indicated his desire to work to strengthen the organisation.
